This is a family of eight orphaned children. The mother and her daughter are both widowed and live together, caring for the children as one household.
Two of the children, Wail and Waleed, are working to help support the family. Wail, the eldest, is only 13 years old and has been forced to leave school in order to provide for his siblings.
When asked what he hopes to become in the future, Wail quietly replied, “Who knows? I might die. Who knows if I’ll live until that day.” His words reflect the weight of responsibility he carries at such a young age. Instead of enjoying his childhood and continuing his education, he is working daily to help keep his family afloat.
